What should I build my House with, Wood Frame, Block or I.C.F. (Insulated Concrete Forms)?
Here are a few things to consider before making your decision to build your house. What type of exterior frame do I want or need? The materials you choose depend of several factors; what type of climate, cost, looks, etc. Below you'll find some pros and cons to help you make that decision.
Wood Frame
Wood frame is the most common method used in new home construction.
Wood Frame is very energy efficient.
Many times it is cheaper to use wood for framing.
Today wood frame homes are less susceptible to insects and decay.
Wood Frame houses are considered "Green" houses because they are for the most part biodegradable.
Concrete Block
In tropical climates block homes act as a "heat sink" and keep the house cooler in the hot months. However, in the cold months it acts the same way...It will be harder to heat the block home and cost you more in heating bills.
Now with the price of concrete up, the cost for a block home will be higher.
Insulation Value : Little insulation value.
It has an unfinished appearance on the exterior unless you add materials; then it will cost a little more. It is cheaper to add hardie plank or vinyl siding to frame homes.
Concrete block is very strong and your house will be built like a Tank.
I.C.F. (Insulated Concrete Forms)
I.C.F. is structurally very strong.
I.C.F. homes are extremely energy efficient which offsets the price of the more expensive I.C.F. construction. R-values can be as much as R-50.
An I.C.F. home can be constructed just as fast as a block or Wood frame home.
I.C.F. homes are extremely insect resistant.
The I.C.F. frame home will on average cost 4% more than block frame home.
